I am sad to say that I have never seen a musical on Broadway. That might not mean a lot to you, but for someone who was a member of singing groups, bands and many plays in school (and who often pretends life is a musical), it’s kind of a big deal.
Today the world celebrates the 10 year anniversary of Wicked! I haven’t seen the musical but I have seen The Wizard of Oz (which comes after Wicked) and I know all the songs from the musical so I think I’m good. For those of you who don’t know the story of Wicked it tells the story of the witches of Oz, Elphaba, who becomes the infamous Wicked Witch of the west, and Gilinda, the Good Witch of the North.
I love this video where the original cast and crew from Wicked share their fondest memories from the production.
The thing I love about musicals, besides the awesome songs which often summarize my life, is there is always a fantastic message behind them. Here are a few lessons from some of my favorite Broadway musicals which became box office hits.
From Rent I learned that there are 525 600 minutes in a year.
The Lion King taught me that one can go from a kid to adult in a song.
Grease showed me how high school was supposed to be.
